Banda Aceh was once an important center for the ancient spice trade exporting nutmeg, mace, cloves, camphor and pepper. It was also teh gateway for Islam to Sumatera and a center of Islamic learning. The Acehnese are known to be a people who take their religion, manners and code of behavior very seriously. the town features attractive traditional and historical architecture.
Baiturrahman Grand Mosque Located in Banda Aceh, this mosque has been described as one of the most beautiful in Indonesia. It was first built in the 13th century but was razed by the Dutch in 1883. Climb the stairs up the minaret for a good view of the city.
Museum Negeri
Antique weaponry, jewellery, costumes and other artifacts provide a look in Aceh's past. The man building known as "Rumoh Aceh" is a fine example of traditional Acehnese architecture and was built entirely without nails. Also in the museum's collection is a huge cast-iron bell that was a gift to the Sultan of Aceh from the Chinese emperor and delivered by the famous Chinese Admiral Cheng Ho in 1414. It was a token indicating that Aceh was highly esteemed by the Chinese court.
Gunongan
This man-made mountain has been described as a "whimsical architectural fantasy". It was commissioned by the Sultan Iskandar Muda (1608-36) as a private playground and bathing place for this consort. Passage to the palace was via the traditional Pintu Aceh reserved for royalty only.
Syiah Kuala Grave
The first Islamic kingdom was established in Aceh in 804 A.D. This is the tomb of Teungku Syiah Kuala, one of the great Muslim ulamas or teachers.
Langsa
The capital of the east Aceh Regency, this town has historical buildings dating back to its colonial past. You can also visit palm and rubber plantations and local fruit orchards in season. Further upland is Lokop which offers panoramic views of rice paddies, hot springs and waterfalls. It is still off beaten track but villagers are friendly and hospitable. The tombs of the first kings of Peureulak who ruled from 840-864 A.D. can be seen in the town by the same name, 35 km away from Langsa.
Bate Island
A small island located 30 minutes away from the mainland by boat. It offers a quiet gateway with lovely beaches and is a popular spot for fishing. There are a few bungalows for accommodation.
Weh Island
Located about 30 km from the mainland and accessible by ferry and plane form Banda Aceh, Weh Island is well-known for its beautiful 'sea gardens' and is popular scuba-diving spot. The island encompasses a variety of attractions that include Dutch colonial architecture, the lovely Aneuk Laot Lake, the historic Merbabu cemetery and beautiful beaches at Gopang and Iboih.
Laut Tawar Lake
This vocanic crater lake is 1,120 metres above sea level. Activities here include skiing, boating and interesting treks to the Telong and Gereudong volcanos. Cave-exploring, the Simpang Balik hot springs and pineapple plantations are other worthwhile side trips.
